Spotlight on Scuplture

Just before spring classes started we had a chance to sit down with Sergio Ceron's Figure Sculpture class and the Self Portrait in Clay class taught by Robin Power.

Sergio has been a part of the Lillstreet Art Center community for years, having studying fine Arts at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. When asked to describe the class students said "Sergio gives positive feedback, never negative criticism" and that the class works well because "there is no competition, all cooperation." When asked: why sculpture? the answer came easily - "In the end, it's learning to see."

Robin's background is in classic figure sculpture and anatomy having studies at the School of the Art Institute. Her students raved about the positive learning environment, fresh perspective, and opportunities for self discovery that Robin presented to them.


Summer classes start tomorrow! Consider expanding your horizons by taking a four week sculpture class- Figure Sculpture with Sergio Ceron, or Bas Relief with Robin Power. Come July take and eight week Figure Sculpture class with Sergio or a Figure in Costume class with Robin. Maybe a one day workshop is a better fit for your summer schedule? Lillstreet's Fourth Annual International Exhibition: Below the Surface

This years Juror is Matthew Metz:
Matthew Metz has been a making his living as a studio potter for the last 20 years. He shares a home and studio in Alfred Station, NY with potter/educator Linda Sikora. Awards he has received include a NEA Crafts Fellowship, and two McKnight Fellowships. He shows and sells his pottery throughout the U.S. and internationally- including the St. Croix Potter’s tour, the Old Church Pottery Show, and the Philadelphia Craft Show.

Medalta International Artists in Residence Program in Medicine Hat, Alberta

Aaron Nelson, the Artistic Director of the Medalta International Artists in Residence (MIAIR) Program in Medicine Hat, Alberta will be visiting Lillstreet on Monday, April 4th. He will present part artist talk, part history lesson and all about the exciting possibilities that exist for artists at Medalta.

The MIAIR Program is designed to serve artists at all stages of their career. Artists are able to pursue their investigations together in spacious semi-private studios. The residency experience is one of cooperation and creativity. This collaborative spirit extends beyond the studio and spills over into the community in the form public events, sales, classes, and special events. Artists also bring their diverse cultural experiences, specialized technical abilities, educational backgrounds, and most importantly an endless variety of definitions of what a ceramic art practice can be. MIAIR is housed in the new Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics , part of the 150 acre Historc Clay District which includes a museum, a brick plant, a china factory, and a clay manufacturer.

EMPTY BOWLS

Lillstreet Art Center is happy to be hosting Empty Bowls again this year on March 25^th, 2011.With the generous support of community members like you over $18,000 was raised to fight hunger through this event last year.

The premise for Empty Bowls is simple: Potters, educators and other craftspeople create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a communal meal of soup and bread. In exchange for $25 donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In addition to the meal, a silent action will be held. All funds raised are donated to First Slice, a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt organization working to end hunger and food insecurity in Chicago.

First Slice recently partnered with the Night Ministry to open a new winter youth shelter, the Crib, located at 835 W. Addison. Through this initiative First Slice provides hot breakfast, bagged lunch, and hot dinners Monday through Friday to over 800 youth per week.

The largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, Feeding America, reports that the nation’s food banks could soon be overwhelmed by demand. Statistics show that 1 out of 8 Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Millions of people have lost their jobs during the recession and the number of food stamp recipients has increased dramatically. Your help is needed now more than ever.

Please consider supporting this grassroots hunger fighting event through donating bowls through March 24. There is a designated cart for bowl donations in the hallway between hand B and the Metals classrooms in the Ceramics department.
