Geof Wheeler: Flesh and Breath: The Anatomy of the Vessel
While we talk about pots in terms of anatomical parts (feet, belly, shoulder, neck, lip) it is the "flesh" of clay, the "bones" of the structure and the "breath" of the volume that make them come alive. Using porcelain, we will be combining hand-built elements and thrown forms, aiming to explore the dynamics of these elements. We will be stretching and altering the wet forms on the wheel, with the intent to emphasize the tension between the breath and the flesh of the pots. Working with soft slabs we will construct handles, spouts and decorative additions to contrast and add harder linear elements to the soft forms. Geof will also be discussing how to use color to enhance and develop the intent of the pots, and how to create a diverse and personal color palette for cone 6 electric firing. Basic throwing skills are required. Bring your tools for throwing (including a metal rib), a small rolling pin, a small ink brayer, and an exacto knife or scalpel.
